How Many People Fit in a Limo, Sprinter or Mini Bus?

This is the question we are asked more than any other, and the honest answer is that the number on the spec sheet and the number that travels comfortably are rarely the same.

Here is what actually fits in each vehicle, including luggage, and how to pick the right size rather than the biggest one.

The Numbers, Vehicle by Vehicle

Executive SUV — Cadillac Escalade or Chevrolet Suburban

Rated: 6 passengers. Comfortable: 5 with luggage, 6 without.

The third row seats two, but not two adults on a long journey. For an airport run with checked bags, four passengers is comfortable and five is workable. Six adults plus a week of luggage is not.

The Suburban has noticeably more boot space than the Escalade, which is why it is our usual recommendation for families flying out.

Stretch Limousine — Chrysler 300

Rated: 12 passengers. Comfortable: 8 to 10.

Stretch limousines seat along the sides rather than in rows, which is sociable but tighter than the number suggests. Twelve fits if everyone is slim and nobody is wearing a ball gown.

For prom, ten is the practical maximum. For a wedding party in full dress, eight. Luggage capacity is minimal — this is an occasion vehicle, not a travel one.

Mercedes Sprinter

Rated: 14 passengers. Comfortable: 12 to 14 with luggage.

This is the one vehicle where the rated number is genuinely achievable. Forward-facing seats, standing headroom, and a luggage area behind the last row.

Fourteen adults with carry-on bags is fine. Fourteen with full checked luggage is tight, and twelve is the better number for a long trip.

Executive Mini Bus

Rated: 28 passengers. Comfortable: 28.

Coach seating in rows with overhead storage. The rated number is the real number, because it is built to a coach standard rather than a converted van.

For a wedding guest shuttle running short loops, all 28 seats work. For a two-hour trip with luggage, plan on 24 and use the back rows for bags.

The Two Numbers You Actually Need

When you enquire, tell us both: how many people, and how many bags. A group of six with hand luggage and a group of six with six large suitcases are different vehicles.

The rough guide for luggage:

Escalade / Suburban — 4 large cases, or 6 carry-on
Stretch limousine — hand luggage only
Sprinter — 10 to 12 large cases behind the rear row
Mini bus — large cases in the rear rows and overhead

Picking the Right Size, Not the Biggest

The most common way people overpay is booking one size up “to be safe”. It is worth saying plainly, even though it costs us money.

Six people fit in an SUV. Putting them in a Sprinter costs more and gains nothing except space nobody uses.

Fourteen people should be one Sprinter, not two SUVs. One vehicle is almost always cheaper than two, and the group arrives together rather than in a convoy that gets separated at the first set of lights.

Above twenty, the mini bus wins on cost per head by a distance. It is the cheapest way to move a group we run.

When the Group Does Not Fit One Vehicle

Above 28 passengers, we run multiple vehicles on one booking — common for weddings and convention groups. One point of contact, one invoice, and a schedule that keeps the vehicles together rather than arriving twenty minutes apart.

For very large groups, the shuttle-loop approach usually beats booking more vehicles. One coach running two or three loops moves ninety people for far less than three coaches running once.

A Few Cases Worth Planning For

Wedding dresses. A full-length gown takes the space of a person. If the bride and four bridesmaids are travelling together in dresses, book for eight rather than five.

Golf clubs and sports kit. Bulky and awkward. Tell us in advance and we will size accordingly rather than discovering it in the driveway.

Child seats. Available on request. Say how many and what ages when you book.

Mobility needs. A vehicle that drops at the door matters more than the seat count for some guests. Tell us and we will plan the drop-off rather than the seating.

The Short Version

Rated capacity is the maximum, not the comfortable number. Count the bags as well as the people. And book the size you need rather than the size above it.
