Derby Week at Churchill Downs

The 153rd Running of the Kentucky Derby takes place on Saturday 1 May 2027 at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Derby week starts well before that, and each day draws a different crowd out of Indiana.

Saturday 1 May — Derby Day

The 153rd Running. Gates open at nine in the morning and post time is around 6:57pm ET, which makes it a very long day. The single busiest date of the Louisville year, and the one that books out first.

Friday 30 April — Kentucky Oaks

Oaks day fills Churchill Downs almost as completely as the Derby, with a fashion-led crowd and pink as the colour of the day. The Barnstable Brown Gala runs that evening.

Thursday — Thurby

The unofficial start of Derby weekend. Racing, live music and bourbon, with noticeably smaller crowds. A good day to go if you would rather see the track than the queue.

Two Hours Each Way

Indianapolis to Louisville is around two hours on I-65 in normal conditions. Derby traffic is not normal conditions, so we plan the departure around the gates rather than around the map.

Day Trip or Overnight

Most groups go down and back in a day. If you are staying over, we can run the transfer both ways on separate dates, or hold the vehicle and chauffeur for the weekend.

Book Well Ahead

Derby and Indy 500 fall within four weeks of each other, which puts enormous pressure on Central Indiana vehicles through May. Reserve early rather than optimistically.

Why not drive

The Two-Hour Problem

The Derby is a drinking day. That is not a criticism, it is the entire tradition. It is also why driving yourself back up I-65 at eleven at night is a genuinely poor plan.

Nobody Draws the Short Straw

The usual arrangement is that one person stays sober and resents it for two hundred miles. With a chauffeur the whole group has the same day, and the drive home is somebody else’s problem.

Parking at Churchill Downs

Derby parking is limited, expensive and a long walk from the gates. Your chauffeur drops you as close as the closures allow and collects you from an agreed point afterwards.

The Journey Becomes Part of It

Two hours each way in a Sprinter or a mini coach with your group is not dead time. Most people tell us the ride down is half the fun, particularly on the way back.

One Price, Agreed Early

No surge, no Derby weekend surcharge added in April, no renegotiation. What you agree when you book is what you pay on the day.

The fleet

Vehicles for the Drive to Louisville

Two hours each way changes what suits. Comfort and space matter more than they do on a twenty-minute airport run.

Kentucky Derby Group Transport from Indianapolis - 28 Passenger Mini Bus
Up to 28 passengers

Executive Mini Bus

The usual choice for Derby parties. Lowest cost per head, and everyone travels together both ways rather than reassembling in a car park.

Mercedes Sprinter to Kentucky Derby from Indianapolis - 14 Passenger Van
12–14 passengers

Mercedes Sprinter

Individual climate control and premium seating, which earns its keep on a four-hour round trip in May.

Stretch Limousine to Kentucky Derby from Indianapolis
Up to 12 passengers

Stretch Limousine

For groups treating Derby as an occasion in its own right. Books out early, since prom season overlaps.

Luxury SUV to Kentucky Derby from Indianapolis - Chevrolet Suburban
Up to 6 passengers

Executive SUV

Couples and small parties. Also the usual choice when the trip is business hospitality rather than a group day out.

Executive Mini Bus Interior - Seating for 28 Passengers Indianapolis
Interior

Inside the Mini Bus

Forward-facing coach seating with overhead storage and air conditioning. Built for distance rather than short hops.

Mercedes Sprinter Interior - Premium Leather Seating for Group Travel
Interior

Inside the Sprinter

Premium leather seating and overhead lighting. Comfortable enough that the two hours down do not feel like two hours.

Photographs show vehicles from our fleet. Interiors are refreshed periodically and vehicles are rotated through service, so the finish of the vehicle supplied may differ in detail from the images here. Capacity and vehicle class are confirmed when you book.

On the way south

We Are Already Halfway There

We dispatch from Johnson County, south of Indianapolis, which puts us on the Louisville side of the metro before the day even starts.

In practice that means an earlier pickup does not require a chauffeur to cross the whole city first, and the return leg finishes sooner. For a trip where the driving is the whole logistical problem, starting from the right end of I-65 matters.

Pickups run from anywhere in Central Indiana. Multiple addresses on one booking are common for Derby parties, and we work them into the route rather than charging for each stop separately.

The bus was clean, comfortable, spacious, rode smooth, and was stocked with plenty of goodies. Our driver was on time, professional, and overall a good time. I felt safe while still being able to let loose and enjoy myself.

From the very start Indy Executive Limo was easy to work with. Our driver, GP, showed patience, flexibility and kindness. This is our second year using this company and their service has been consistently excellent.

Booked a van for a wine tour. Mitch, the driver, had hangover kits for everyone. He took us to four different wineries and we had a great time. Cannot wait to do another one.

Common questions

Kentucky Derby Transport FAQ

When is the 2027 Kentucky Derby?

Saturday 1 May 2027, the 153rd Running, at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Gates open at nine in the morning and post time is around 6:57pm ET. The Kentucky Oaks runs the day before, on Friday 30 April.

How long is the drive from Indianapolis?

Around two hours each way on I-65 in normal traffic. Derby day is not normal traffic, so we plan the departure around when you want to be through the gates rather than around the map estimate.

Can you do a day trip, or do we need to stay over?

Most groups go down and back in the same day, which is entirely workable with a chauffeur because nobody has to drive home. If you are staying over we can run the two legs on separate dates instead.

How much does it cost?

Quoted as a flat rate for the trip based on vehicle and group size, agreed before you book and unchanged afterwards. There is no Derby weekend surcharge added later.

Can you pick up from several addresses?

Yes, and it is common for Derby parties. Multiple pickups across Central Indiana are worked into the route rather than charged for individually.

How early should we book?

As early as you can. Derby and the Indy 500 fall within four weeks of each other, so the whole of May is under pressure for Central Indiana vehicles. We are taking 2027 bookings now.

Tell us the group size and where you are starting from. We will confirm the vehicle and a flat rate that does not move between now and Derby day.
